Türkiye secured its spot in the round of 16 at the 2025 European Basketball Championship (FIBA EuroBasket 2025) on Saturday, defeating Portugal 95-54 in its third Group A match to remain unbeaten at 3-0.
The Turkish national team led 22-13 after the first quarter behind Alperen Sengun, who scored 14 points and set the tone offensively.
Türkiye widened the gap in the second quarter with contributions from its bench, heading into halftime with a commanding 51-27 advantage.
The dominance continued in the second half, as Omer Faruk Yurtseven powered through under the basket against a Portuguese side that had lost its discipline. In the closing minutes of the third quarter, Türkiye hit consecutive shots from beyond the arc to push the lead to 73-37.
Portugal offered little resistance in the final period, and Türkiye closed out the game with a 95-54 win.
Portugal’s head coach Mario Gomes was ejected with four minutes left after being called for two consecutive technical fouls.
Türkiye will face Estonia in its fourth Group A matchup on Monday, Sept. 1.
In other Group A action, Serbia edged host Latvia 84-80 to claim its third straight victory and also advance, while Estonia earned its first win by beating Czechia 89-75.
With the top four teams moving on, Türkiye and Serbia stand at three wins each. Latvia, Estonia, and Portugal have one win apiece, while Czechia remains winless.
Türkiye’s standout Alperen Sengun has drawn attention with his performances throughout the group stage. The 23-year-old center, who played a pivotal role in the team’s qualification, is averaging 19.6 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists per game.
If Sengun records double digits in points, rebounds, and assists in one of the remaining games, he will become only the fifth player in European Championship history to post a triple-double.
