Türkiye sweeps Bulgaria to reach last 16 at Volleyball World Championship

Türkiye’s women’s national volleyball team, known as the Sultans of the Net, advanced to the last 16 of the 2025 FIVB World Championship after sweeping Bulgaria 3-0 in their second Group E match on Monday.

Türkiye edged a tight first set 25-23 before taking the second 25-19. In the third set, the team rallied from six points down to lead 15-10, maintaining control to close out the set 25-13 and the match 3-0.

The result came after Türkiye also beat Spain in straight sets in their opening match on Aug. 23. Bulgaria, meanwhile, lost their first match 3-1 to Canada.

The Turkish squad includes Cansu Ozbay, Elif Sahin, Melissa Vargas, Ebrar Karakurt, Hande Baladin, Derya Cebecioglu, Ilkin Aydin, Yaprak Erkek, Eda Erdem Dundar, Zehra Gunes, Asli Kalac, Sinead Jack-Kisal, Gizem Orge and Eylul Akarcesme Yatgin.

Türkiye will face Canada in their final group match on Aug. 27 at 12:00 (GMT+3), with first place in the group at stake.

The championship, held every four years, is being staged in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Nakhon Ratchasima. Türkiye’s group matches are taking place in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Since debuting in 2006 with a 10th-place finish, Türkiye has recorded its best result at the World Championship in 2010, finishing sixth. The team placed ninth in 2014, 10th in 2018, and eighth in 2022.
