Türkiye's Zeynep Sonmez moved into the second round of the Memphis Classic after overcoming Canada's Cadence Brace in a closely contested three-set match.
Competing as the fourth seed in the singles draw, Sonmez took the opening set 6-4 before Brace fought back to claim the second 6-3.
The Turkish national player regained control in the deciding set, wrapping up a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory in the opening round of the WTA 250 event, a tournament held under the Women's Tennis Association tour.
Sonmez will next take on Elvina Kalieva of the United States as she looks to move further into the Memphis tournament.
Born in Istanbul in 2002, Zeynep Sonmez is a Turkish professional tennis player and one of the leading figures in Türkiye's tennis history. She won her first WTA 250 title in Merida in 2024 and later became the highest-ranked Turkish player in WTA history, reaching a career-high world ranking of No. 51.
Sonmez also became the first Turkish player in the Open Era to reach the third round of a Grand Slam, achieving the milestone at Wimbledon in 2025 before repeating it at the 2026 Australian Open.
Known for her speed, aggressive style and sportsmanship, she also recorded the first Top 10 victory of her career by defeating Jasmine Paolini in Stuttgart.
