Zeynep Sonmez bows out of Memphis Classic after 3-set defeat

Türkiye's Zeynep Sonmez bowed out of the Memphis Classic Women's Tennis Tournament in the second round after suffering a three-set defeat against American player Elvina Kalieva.

Sonmez, who entered the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) 250 tournament as the fourth seed, went down 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 on the event's hard courts.

Sonmez lets early lead slip away

The Turkish player made a strong start and wrapped up the opening set 6-3, but Kalieva fought back to take the second set 7-5 and push the match into a decider.

The final set remained closely contested, although Sonmez moved 4-1 ahead and appeared to be closing in on a place in the quarterfinals.

Kalieva pulls off deciding-set comeback

Kalieva, ranked No. 132 in the world, turned the match around by coming back from 4-1 down in the deciding set.

The American eventually took the final set 7-5, sealing a 2-1 victory and moving through to the quarterfinals as Sonmez's Memphis campaign came to an end.
