The Greek government remained silent over offensive slogans chanted against the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus(TRNC) and Türkiye by Greek Naval Academy students during the March 25 Independence Day military parade in Athens, Turkish daily Hurriyet writes. Hurriyet calls the slogans by Greek soldiers "obnoxious."
Despite Türkiye’s diplomatic protests in both Ankara and Athens, the Greek government has yet to issue a statement on the incident.
According toTurkish Foreign Ministrysources familiar with the matter, the incident was deemed an unacceptable attempt to undermine Turkish-Greek relations.
Greek media reported that the Greek Defense Ministry responded swiftly right after the incident, with the Naval Forces Command launching a disciplinary investigation into the incident, in which some members of the Greek Armed Forces insulted Türkiye and Turkish Cypriots.
While far-right figures in Greece expressed support for the incident, opposition parties PASOK and Syriza condemned it as "indiscipline."
Greece’s main opposition party (SYRIZA) denounced the slogans as unacceptable and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
The offensive slogans were chanted three times as the Naval Academy students marched from Syntagma Square toward Omonia Square in the presence of newly elected President Konstantinos Tasoulas and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
