Wildfire rages near Gallipoli peninsula, prompts Dardanelles Strait traffic suspension
In the Eceabat district of Canakkale, a fire erupted in cultivated land near the village of Kumkoy, specifically in the Akbas area on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The fire’s exact cause is currently unknown, but it swiftly spread to nearby forested areas.
In response to the escalating situation, the Canakkale Forestry Regional Directorate promptly dispatched teams to the site.
The fire, visible from several surrounding residential areas, prompted immediate efforts to contain it. These efforts include both aerial and ground interventions, although they are challenged by strong winds prevailing in the area.
The impact of the fire has been significant enough to prompt the General Directorate of Coastal Safety to temporarily suspend north-south traffic in the Dardanelles Strait. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of maritime traffic and prevent any potential hazards posed by smoke or fire near the strait.
Authorities continue to work diligently to bring the fire under control and minimize its impact on the local environment and communities.
