A 5.7-magnitude earthquake rattled Bangladesh on Friday, briefly shaking buildings in Dhaka and prompting residents to rush into the streets, according to early assessments that reported no damage or casualties.
Bangladesh’s Meteorological Department confirmed that the quake struck at 10:38 a.m. local time, adding that the shaking lasted only a few seconds but was strong enough to make people run out of apartments, offices, and shops across Dhaka. Officials noted that there were no signs of structural damage or injuries in the immediate aftermath.
Authorities identified the epicenter in Narsingdi district, located roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of the capital. Seismologists described the event as moderate in strength, emphasising that early reports suggested no threat of secondary incidents.
Emergency services continued to monitor the situation, while meteorological officials said the tremor did not trigger any alerts beyond public awareness messaging. Residents gradually returned indoors as the situation stabilized.
