A car ploughed into a crowd of Liverpool FC fans celebrating the club’s Premier League victory on Monday evening, in what British media have described as a suspected terror attack.

Several Liverpool fans were injured, according to unconfirmed reports cited by Daily Mail.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack "appalling," in a post on X..

A male detained after the attack

Police stated they received reports that "a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street" shortly after 6:00 pm local time (1700 GMT) adding that a male had been detained over the incident.

Suspected terror attack against Liverpool fans

According to British media outlet The Mirror, eyewitnesses said the driver “deliberately” drove into fans gathered along the parade route. Unconfirmed reports suggest several people may have been injured..

Police detained a man at the scene, though authorities have not yet disclosed details about the suspect’s identity, the motive, or the number of casualties.

In a later statement, police identified the arrested individual as "53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area."

Meanwhile, police asked people "not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding" the incident, and that "Extensive enquiries" were ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

Footage circulating online captured chaotic scenes as some fans appeared to be dragged by the vehicle before it came to a halt. There were screams and stampede as emergency services rushed to the scene.

The area has been cordoned off, with emergency services remaining on-site. A full investigation is ongoing.

Tragedy has left a lasting mark on Liverpool's football history. In 1989, 97 Liverpool fans died in a stadium crush during a match in Sheffield. In 1985, 39 fans—mostly Italians—were killed when a wall collapsed amid clashes between Liverpool and Juventus supporters at Heysel Stadium in Brussels.

27 hospitalised, police call ramming non-terrorist incident

Liverpool police said Monday they are not treating a car ramming in that left 27 people hospitalized as a terrorist incident, after a vehicle plowed into crowds celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League football title.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it,” Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said at a press conference, adding that a 53-year-old British man had been arrested.

“The incident is not being treated as terrorism,” she added.
