U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday criticized Europe’s political and economic direction during remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
“I love Europe, and I want to see Europe go good, but it’s not heading in the right direction,” Trump said during his speech at the annual forum.
Trump said some parts of Europe were “not even recognizable anymore,” without naming specific countries.
He framed his criticism around what he described as long-standing policy choices adopted by governments in Washington and European capitals over recent decades.
According to Trump, a prevailing view had emerged that economic growth depended on expanding government spending, large-scale migration and reliance on foreign imports.
He said this approach included shifting what he called “dirty jobs” and heavy industry abroad, replacing affordable energy with what he described as a “green new scam,” and supporting economies by importing “entirely different populations from faraway lands.”
Trump made the remarks as part of his broader address to global political and business leaders attending the Davos forum.
