U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he would not travel to Paris for a proposed emergency meeting of the Group of Seven (G7), citing doubts about the political future of French President Emmanuel Macron.
Asked during a White House briefing whether he would attend the meeting offered by Macron, Trump said, “No, I wouldn’t do that.”
“Because, you know, Emmanuel is not going to be there very long. And, you know, there’s no longevity there. He’s a friend of mine. He’s a nice guy. I like Macron, but he’s not going to be there very much longer,” Trump said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump shared what he described as a private text message from Macron on his Truth Social account.
In the message, Macron suggested holding a meeting in Paris on Thursday afternoon following the World Economic Forum summit in Davos, Switzerland.
He said participants could include Ukrainians, Danes, Syrians and Russians.
Macron also invited Trump to have dinner together in Paris before the U.S. president returned to the United States, according to screenshots posted by Trump.
