Powerful explosions were heard in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early Sunday after officials warned of a possible ballistic missile attack and ordered residents to take shelter, Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalists reported.

The city’s military administration issued the alert shortly before 4:00 a.m. (0200 GMT), urging residents to immediately move to shelters.

“Attention! An air alert has been declared in Kyiv due to the threat of the enemy using ballistic weapons,” the administration said, calling on people to remain in shelters until the alarm is lifted.

Moments after the warning, several loud blasts were heard across the city, according to AFP journalists.

Air defenses respond in wider region

Regional authorities said air defense units were engaging drones detected over the broader Kyiv region.

Officials also reminded civilians not to film or publish images of ongoing military activity.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Ongoing attacks since 2022 invasion

Kyiv has been regularly targeted by Russian missile and drone attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.

In recent weeks, the capital has faced waves of overnight strikes as Moscow intensified winter assaults on energy and military infrastructure.
