Rescuers in Nepal recovered 14 bodies on Tuesday, raising the country's confirmed death toll to 1,399, according to Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The authority said 5,179 people remain unaccounted for.
The agency reported that 13,742 people have been rescued since the disaster struck, with 21,022 security personnel mobilized for search, rescue and relief operations.
Among those still missing are 587 foreign tourists. Authorities noted the missing-person count remains subject to verification and may include unidentified bodies or people already rescued.
Across the border in Xizang, the Chinese autonomous region Beijing designates in place of Tibet, the death toll stands at 43, with 519 people missing, including 261 foreign nationals
The disaster began Aug. 26, when a glacier on Mount Langtang Lirung, a peak in the Himalayas north of Kathmandu, fractured at an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet).
The fracture triggered an ice-rock avalanche that turned into a massive debris flow, sweeping through valleys along the Nepal-China border.
Floodwaters and mudslides devastated Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Kavre districts, located north and northeast of Kathmandu, as well as the Kathmandu Valley itself. On the Chinese side, the disaster buried the Gyirong border crossing in Xizang.
