Russia is continuing contacts with the U.S. over a potential ceasefire on attacks against energy infrastructure in Ukraine, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.
“Contacts regarding this matter are ongoing,” Peskov told reporters, referring to the proposal mentioned by U.S. President Donald Trump last week.
Peskov said the issue had also been discussed at Monday’s news conference and that he had nothing further to add.
Trump said Sunday on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate ceasefire on attacks targeting each other’s energy infrastructure.
Earlier Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Axios that Kyiv was prepared to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow halted attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, stressing that any de-escalation should be reciprocal and supported by guarantees.
Peskov said Monday that the Kremlin had no immediate comment on the proposed halt but confirmed that contacts with the U.S. were continuing.
Peskov said he saw no direct connection between Russia’s position on Ukraine and an agreement announced by Trump on Friday for Moscow to supply diesel to the U.S. and global markets.
Trump unveiled the deal after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Peskov described the agreement as a “highly mutually beneficial” area of Russian-American cooperation.
“This serves the interests of the United States, the interests of global energy markets, and the interests of the Russian Federation; that is why it is happening,” he said.
Peskov also claimed that European countries could attempt to hinder the agreement.
He said Russia offered competitive products on global markets and would continue doing so.
Peskov said the Kremlin was unaware of reports that the U.S. could stop sharing intelligence with Kyiv.
He also said Moscow had no information about a U.S.- and European-proposed peace plan for the Ukraine war reported by The Washington Post.
Separately, Peskov said it was too early to discuss a compensation mechanism for financial losses suffered by Yandex users following recent Ukrainian attacks on the company’s data centers.
