Supporters of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva rallied Monday on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro to back his reelection campaign before the Oct. 25 runoff.
“This week will show how my opponent's party will vote: whether it wants workers to work six days and rest one, or give workers two days off,” Lula said, as reported by Agencia Brasil.
The rally took place along Avenida Atlantica and stretched across several blocks of the seaside boulevard, the Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported.
The gathering followed a pro-Lula rally on Avenida Paulista in Sao Paulo on Sunday.
Lula’s rival, Flavio Bolsonaro, attended a campaign rally in Sao Goncalo near Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, according to local media.
Both candidates courted voters and worked to solidify their backing ahead of the runoff, since neither reached an absolute majority in the first round on Oct. 4.
Electoral figures show Flavio Bolsonaro took 47.03% of valid votes and Lula 45.16%.
Lula returned to the presidency in January 2023 after defeating Flavio’s father, Jair Bolsonaro, in the 2022 election. Jair Bolsonaro governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022 and remains a central figure in the country's conservative movement.
Lula emphasizes workers' rights and social programs while Bolsonaro represents the conservative camp associated with his father.
Voters will decide on Oct. 25 who leads Brazil, Latin America’s largest economy, over the coming presidential term.
