A magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred off the coast of New Zealand's North Island, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake struck 14 kilometers (8.6 miles) south of Hicks Bay, a coastal area near the northeastern tip of the North Island, within the Gisborne region on the island's eastern side.
USGS recorded the earthquake at a depth of approximately 52.8 kilometers.
No casualties or property damage have been reported so far in connection with the earthquake.
