Navi Pillay, who received the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her work on peace and international law, joked about sharing the award with U.S. President Donald Trump after learning she had won.
Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnes Callamard shared a video on the social media platform X, capturing the moment Pillay learned she had won the award.
In her post, Callamard stated, "An incredible moment. Navi Pillay has won the Nobel Peace Prize. We are currently together at the Nuremberg Trials. I couldn't think of a stronger symbol for this award. We are all overjoyed."
Pillay also expressed her satisfaction at learning she had won the award while she was with her colleagues who defend human rights.
Reminding that she had recently worked on a report describing the events in Gaza as "genocide," Pillay said that she was appreciated for her courage following this work.
Stating that this surprised her, Pillay remarked, "Why should courage be needed to tell the truth?" Making a playful reference to Trump's statements claiming he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, Pillay joked, "If you applaud a little more, I might share this award with Trump."
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize had been awarded to South African jurist Pillay for her efforts in establishing peace and strengthening international law.
Pakistan, Israel, and Cambodia had announced that they nominated Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize due to his contributions to the resolution of various conflicts. Trump had also previously argued on multiple occasions that he deserved the award.
