Russia accused European leaders Wednesday of preparing for a direct confrontation with Moscow rather than pursuing meaningful security dialogue, while confirming that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would attend the upcoming G20 foreign ministers' meeting in the United States.
Speaking at a news briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Europe remained unwilling to engage in an “honest discussion” about its interests, accusing the leadership of European institutions of making demands that were “entirely detached from reality.”
“As for European security, our Western neighbors still perceive its essence, or so they believe, as the continued flooding of the Kyiv regime with weapons and open preparation for a direct confrontation with our country in the coming years,” Zakharova said.
She argued that Moscow had seen no significant change in the approach of most European Union politicians toward Russia, pointing to the bloc's recently revised Arctic strategy as further evidence of what she described as growing militarization.
Zakharova said the EU's Arctic strategy, published Oct. 20, reflected Brussels' intention to “continue pursuing active military development” in the region.
She dismissed the revised strategy as “lacking both originality and fresh thinking,” arguing that it reinforced an increasingly confrontational approach toward Russia.
“In effect, this cements the EU’s politicized approach to the high latitudes–a region that Brussels now views primarily through the lens of escalation and, as stated, the containment of Russia.”
The spokeswoman maintained that the 27-member bloc continued to prioritize military measures over a broader discussion of European security interests.
Turning to the war in Ukraine, Zakharova accused Kyiv of attempting to obstruct diplomatic efforts by Moscow and Washington to resume consultations on a possible settlement.
She claimed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was “literally obsessed” with prolonging the conflict, which has continued for more than four years.
Her remarks came as Russia and the United States continued efforts to establish conditions for renewed diplomatic engagement over the war.
Zakharova also confirmed that Lavrov would attend the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, scheduled for Oct. 30-31.
She said most organizational arrangements for the Russian delegation had been finalized, although several outstanding issues were resolved only shortly before the planned departure.
“I should mention, however, that given that the departure is scheduled for within the next 24 hours, most issues were successfully resolved at the last minute. So the delegation has been formed, all formalities are complete, and it is ready to get to work,” she said.
