Russia warned Tuesday that any British or NATO attempt to blockade or strike the Kaliningrad region would be met with a response using all available means, including nuclear weapons.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the Russian Embassy in London responded to British media reports discussing scenarios involving a NATO blockade of Kaliningrad, possible strikes on the region, or the withdrawal of recognition of Russian sovereignty over it.
“Those advocating plans to blockade or strike Kaliningrad should have no illusions about the consequences,” the embassy said. “Any British or NATO military action against Russian territory would be met with a response using all means at Russia’s disposal, including nuclear weapons.”
The embassy said it was responding to an article in The i Paper discussing possible NATO action against Kaliningrad, including a blockade or "de-recognizing Russian sovereignty.”
It also cited Sky News’ recent mini-series “The Wargame,” which examined a hypothetical strike scenario.
The embassy said Russia does not seek confrontation with NATO or Europe and does not intend to attack them.
The Russian Embassy in Paris issued a similar warning last week in comments to Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency about what it described as “provocative statements” concerning possible NATO strikes on Kaliningrad or efforts to block access to the region.
“Russia will use all means at its disposal to defend its territory,” the embassy said, adding that any attempt to carry out such plans would bring an “inevitable and overwhelming” response.
Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea between Poland and Lithuania, separated from mainland Russia by Lithuanian territory.
