A Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine’s SBU security service in central Kyiv on Friday, targeting the office of the agency’s chief, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
“Unfortunately, a Russian drone hit the central building of the SBU on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv, opposite the St. Sophia Cathedral,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram after speaking with SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad.
Zelenskyy said the drone was aimed “directly at the office” of the SBU head.
An Agence France-Presse (AFP) reporter saw ambulances parked near the scene following the strike.
The attack came as Zelenskyy said Thursday that Ukraine hopes to meet U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys in Kyiv “in the coming days” as efforts continue toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
In an evening video address, Zelenskyy said he had met Ukraine’s negotiating team to prepare for upcoming discussions with the U.S. side.
He said “preliminary dates” had been set for a visit by U.S. envoys to Kyiv and that the representatives were also expected to hold meetings in Moscow.
“We expect a meeting in the coming days,” Zelenskyy said, adding that Washington’s continued active involvement in efforts to end the war was important.
Moscow and Kyiv last held U.S.-mediated peace negotiations earlier this year, with three rounds of talks on Jan. 23-24, Feb. 4-5 and Feb. 17-18.
The first two rounds took place in Abu Dhabi, while the third was held in Geneva.
Negotiations have since been paused, with both Moscow and Kyiv attributing the halt to the U.S. focus on Iran, which began in late February.
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner have never visited Kyiv, although both have traveled to Moscow several times since the U.S.-mediated talks began.
Their most recent visit was on Jan. 22, when they met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
