A Russian man suspected of shooting and wounding senior Russian military intelligence officer Vladimir Alekseyev in Moscow has been arrested in Dubai and handed over to Russia, the FSB security service said Sunday.
Russian media quoted the FSB as saying the suspect, a man in his 60s, fled to the United Arab Emirates after the attack before being detained and transferred to Russian custody.
A suspected accomplice was arrested in Moscow, while another individual involved in the case escaped to Ukraine, the agency said.
Alekseyev, the deputy head of Russia’s GRU military intelligence service, was shot in an apartment building in Moscow on Friday and was hospitalized. His condition was not immediately disclosed.
Several high-ranking Russian military officials have been assassinated or targeted in attacks in Russia and Moscow-controlled Ukrainian territory since Moscow launched its full-scale military offensive against Ukraine in February 2022.
Alekseyev is under Western sanctions over alleged involvement in cyberattacks and the organization of a nerve agent attack on former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal in Britain in 2018.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Ukraine of orchestrating the shooting.
Kyiv, which has previously claimed responsibility for the killing of several senior Russian military officials since the start of the war, has not commented on this incident.
