Daniel Kinahan, widely identified as the head of one of Europe’s most powerful crime networks, was arrested in Dubai on Friday under a warrant issued by Irish courts over alleged organized crime offenses.
Dubai police confirmed the arrest of an Irish national identified as "D.J.K," describing him as a member of a criminal group tied to international offenses. Authorities noted the operation unfolded just 48 hours after prosecutors issued the warrant on April 15.
Irish police, acknowledging the development, stated that a man in his late 40s was detained under a court-backed warrant linked to serious organized crime activity.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said the arrest followed Ireland’s formal request to the United Arab Emirates to secure Kinahan’s extradition.
Authorities pointed to a bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the UAE as the legal framework behind the arrest, though Kinahan remains in UAE custody for now.
Irish officials indicated that the next phase will depend on Emirati legal procedures.
The Kinahan organization, often referred to as the Kinahan cartel, has been identified by U.S. and European authorities as a far-reaching criminal network involved in drug trafficking and money laundering across multiple regions.
Washington imposed sanctions on Kinahan in 2022, naming him and close associates as key figures at the top of the organization.
Kinahan relocated to Dubai around 2016 with his long-time partner Neslihan Yildirim after violent incidents in Ireland, a move that helped the group deepen its international footprint and strengthen operational links.
Yildirim, a Turkish national with reported residency in the Netherlands, has drawn increasing attention from intelligence services. She is described as both Kinahan’s partner and a key operational figure within the network.
According to intelligence findings, she has been linked to efforts to expand the group’s logistics capacity, including attempts to establish cargo aircraft routes for trafficking operations.
The pair’s relocation to Dubai, alongside other senior members, marked a turning point that accelerated the organisation’s global expansion and consolidation.
Kinahan has also been connected to the boxing world through a now-defunct management company that represented fighters including Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton.
