U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that he may meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his planned trip to Asia next month, signaling openness to renewed direct talks.
“I may, yeah. That’ll be exciting, won’t it? But I get along with him,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for Ohio.
A meeting would mark another round of direct engagement between Trump and Kim, who held several meetings during Trump’s first term as the two sides sought to address North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
Trump is scheduled to travel to the Philippines for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, summit on Nov. 16.
He will then travel to Shenzhen, China, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, summit from Nov. 17-19.
The South China Morning Post reported that Trump planned to attend the ASEAN meetings in the Philippines before traveling to the APEC gathering.
Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in renewed talks with Kim and again indicated Monday that he was open to meeting the North Korean leader.
