The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) have expanded their overseas military engagement to Senegal, adding the West African country to a list of 15 nations where Türkiye provides military training and supports peace efforts.
Following Senegal’s request for assistance after the withdrawal of French forces, the Turkish Navy has begun training Senegalese military personnel, according to information provided by Turkish authorities.
France ended its 65-year military presence in Senegal in July, completing its withdrawal from several Sahel countries, including Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.
After the departure of French troops, Senegal sought Türkiye’s support to strengthen its armed forces.
In October, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding titled “Memorandum of Understanding Between the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Government of the Republic of Senegal on Providing Search and Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Training and Support to the Senegalese Armed Forces.”
Following the agreement, the TSK began providing training to the Senegalese Armed Forces.
Personnel from the Turkish Naval Forces Command are delivering search and rescue training and support while conducting training flights over Senegal’s airspace and maritime jurisdiction areas.
As part of the program, familiarization flights were carried out with the participation of Senegalese aircrew to strengthen mutual cooperation and trust.
In addition to Senegal, the TSK maintains a presence in countries including Azerbaijan, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.
Overall, Türkiye’s armed forces are active in 15 countries across Asia, Europe and Africa, focusing on military training, capacity building and contributing to peace and stability.
