United States Vice President JD Vance criticized Abdul El-Sayed, the Egyptian-origin Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, and urged voters to support his Republican rival, Mike Rogers.
Vance attended a campaign event in Sterling Heights, Michigan, where he targeted El-Sayed ahead of the November midterm elections.
“Reject Sayed in the November elections and send Mike Rogers to the U.S. Senate,” Vance told the crowd.
El-Sayed, whose full name is Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed and who uses the shortened name Abdul El-Sayed, won the Democratic nomination after defeating U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Aug. 5 primary.
The Egyptian-origin Muslim candidate, the son of an immigrant family and a medical doctor, will face Rogers, a former member of the House of Representatives, in the November election.
If elected, El-Sayed would become the first Muslim senator elected to the U.S. Senate.
El-Sayed has described Israel’s attacks against Palestinians as genocide and argued that resources provided to Israel should instead be directed to health care, housing and infrastructure investments in the United States.
