The death toll from twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela in late June has risen to 6,301, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said Monday.
Rodriguez said emergency teams have rescued 6,462 people since the earthquakes struck, and that 73,356 people have required hospital treatment across the South American nation.
More than 50,000 residences have been evaluated for damage, according to Rodriguez. Of those, 31,336 remain habitable, 12,411 are restricted, and 9,567 have been classified as high risk. The government has delivered 287 new homes to displaced families so far.
Cleanup crews have collected more than 483,525 tons of debris, roughly 23.2 percent of the estimated total wreckage, Rodriguez said.
The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, causing widespread damage and prompting the government to declare national emergencies.
