Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek on Sunday to attend the 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and begin a state visit, Chinese state media reported.
Xi is visiting Kyrgyzstan and Egypt at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, according to Xinhua News Agency.
His delegation includes first lady Peng Liyuan, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Cai Qi, a senior Chinese official and director of the Communist Party of China General Office.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other leaders from member countries are also expected in Bishkek for the two-day summit beginning Monday.
The meeting marks the 25th anniversary of the SCO, a regional bloc that includes China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus.
The organization has sought to balance Western global influence.
Putin is expected to hold separate bilateral meetings with Xi and Pezeshkian, as well as other leaders attending the summit, according to Kremlin spokesperson Yuri Ushakov.
Following his visit to Kyrgyzstan, Xi’s tour is also set to include a state visit to Egypt.
