Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the U.S. administration Friday to impose new sanctions on Russia immediately after recent deadly strikes on Ukraine.
“Sanctions need to be imposed now,” Zelenskyy told the Yalta European Strategy forum.
“Honestly, I sometimes do not understand why decisions cannot be made quickly,” he added.
His comments came as he said he planned to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in late September, amid U.S.-led efforts to end the four-and-a-half-year war.
Zelenskyy also called for a truce covering attacks on energy infrastructure and said Ukraine was prepared to retaliate if Russia targeted its energy grid during the winter.
“Russia knows that if they strike... they will receive the same in return,” he said.
Both Moscow and Kyiv have intensified long-range strikes in recent months as U.S.-led peace efforts remain deadlocked.
An early morning Russian drone strike on a petrol station in Kyiv killed two people and sent four others to hospital, the city’s mayor said.
