A total of 38.7 million vehicles have passed through Türkiye's five longest highway tunnels to date, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced in a written statement.

The minister noted that the number of tunnels in Türkiye has increased from 83 at the end of 2002 to 548 as of today, while total tunnel length has grown from 50 kilometers to 881 kilometers over the same period. This represents roughly a 6.6-fold increase in the number of tunnels and a 17.6-fold increase in total tunnel length, he said.
The 831 kilometers added to the tunnel network during this period correspond to the highway distance between Kilis and Afyonkarahisar, Uraloglu added.
Uraloglu noted that the Zigana, Ovit, Egribel, Ilgaz 15 Temmuz Istiklal and Cankurtaran tunnels are Türkiye's longest highway tunnels, with a combined length of 45.4 kilometers.
These major tunnels save 3.3 billion lira annually in fuel consumption and time, Uraloglu said, adding that a total of 38.7 million vehicles have passed through Türkiye's five longest highway tunnels since they opened.
Uraloglu emphasized that the tunnels have raised transportation standards on routes with challenging geographic conditions.
"High mountains and passes are being overcome with tunnels," he said. "Safer and uninterrupted transportation is being provided, particularly in regions where winter conditions are severe."
He added, "With our tunnels, we are not only crossing mountains and passes, but also shortening routes, reducing travel times and ensuring safer transportation for our citizens."
