International Energy Agency (IEA) head Fatih Birol met NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels and discussed energy security risks with the alliance’s ambassadors, Birol said in a social media post.

Birol wrote on X that he was pleased to meet Rutte.

He said he also addressed NATO ambassadors at the alliance’s headquarters in the Belgian capital.

Economic and national security in focus

Birol said the talks centered on how energy security risks are changing worldwide and what those shifts mean for economic security and national security.

His post did not say how long the meetings lasted or which specific risks were raised.

The IEA, based in Paris, was created in 1974 after the oil crisis of the early 1970s to help industrialized countries respond to disruptions in oil supplies.

Its remit has since widened to cover energy policy, data and analysis more broadly.

NATO, the 32-member Western military alliance, is headquartered in Brussels, where its ambassadors, known as permanent representatives, meet regularly in the North Atlantic Council.

Birol’s account did not include details of any decisions, agreements or follow-up steps arising from the meetings.

It also did not say whether Rutte or any NATO officials had commented publicly on the discussions.
