Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Monday called for rapid action against “improper and uncontrolled” use of artificial intelligence and warned against manipulation of information with fake news, according to local media. In Italy, the head of state is a largely ceremonial role.
“We must act swiftly and effectively to prevent the improper and uncontrolled use” of artificial intelligence, Mattarella said at the opening ceremony of the Festival of Regions, an annual event bringing together Italy’s regional administrations, ANSA news agency reported.
He stressed the need for establishing and implementing an appropriate regulation.
“Already today, it is evident how the manipulation of information, including through the spread of false news using the capabilities offered by the internet, can influence public opinion and shape its views and choices,” Mattarella also said.
He warned against the risk of losing control over technological processes with the development of models through machine learning, a method in which computer systems learn patterns from large amounts of data. His remarks focused on the possible effects of the technology on public debate and democratic life.
“The need is to put the brakes on an increasingly intense competition among a limited number of players, with outcomes that science is currently unable to predict,” Mattarella noted.
“If we limited ourselves to being spectators of the expansion of computing power in every direction, the fundamental values of the centrality of human life and, at the same time, our democracy could be undermined,” he further warned.
