Türkiye consumed 4.1 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas in May 2025, ranking as Europe’s second-largest consumer after Germany, which recorded 4.4 bcm, according to a sectoral report.

The figures place Türkiye ahead of Italy (3.3 bcm), contributing 17% of the continent’s total gas usage of 24.2 bcm for the month, according to data from Türkiye’s Natural Gas Distributors Association (GAZBIR).

Residential demand drives surge in gas consumption

Natural gas consumption in Türkiye rose 28% year-on-year in May, driven by a sharp increase in household usage. Residential consumption reached 1.49 bcm—up 75% from the same month in 2024—partly due to below-average seasonal temperatures, particularly in densely populated regions such as Marmara and Eastern Anatolia.

In the Marmara region, average household consumption was 71.5 cubic meters, while Eastern Anatolia reported 86.3 cubic meters. The national average stood at 70 cubic meters per household in May.

Industrial consumption totaled 1.14 bcm, marking a 4% rise from a year earlier. Meanwhile, gas use for electricity generation increased by 11% to 896 million cubic meters. Combined with other sectors—including transport, fuel production, and service industries—these accounted for the remaining share of Türkiye’s total monthly consumption.

Imports grow on annual basis despite monthly slowdown

Türkiye imported 3.54 bcm of natural gas in May, a 23% increase compared to the same month in 2024. However, imports declined by 522 million cubic meters from April.

Pipeline gas constituted 89% of total imports, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) made up the remaining 11%.

The main pipeline suppliers were Russia (1.19 bcm), Iran (1.06 bcm), and Azerbaijan (792 million cubic meters). Among LNG exporters, Algeria and the United States provided 1.05 and 0.79 bcm, respectively, during the January–May period.

Production climbs with Sakarya field, exports grow slightly

Meanwhile, domestic natural gas production reached 296 million cubic meters in May, up from 190 million cubic meters the previous year.

The rise was primarily due to increased output from the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea, which supplied 269 million cubic meters and now accounts for over 90% of national production, while smaller contributions came from Tekirdag, Kirklareli, and Istanbul.

Türkiye exported 157 million cubic meters of natural gas in May 2025, primarily to Bulgaria, which received the bulk of the volume. A small shipment of 0.12 million cubic meters was also sent to North Macedonia.

Thus, Türkiye's overall export figure rose by 11 million cubic meters from April.
