Türkiye and China will carry out joint work on space technologies under a new agreement signed between TURKSAT and China Satcom for research and development, product development and commercialization.

The protocol was signed during the 77th International Astronautical Congress, or IAC 2026, which is continuing at the Antalya NEST Congress Center.

The congress is organized by the International Astronautical Federation, with Anadolu Agency serving as its global communication partner. It is being held under the coordination of the Industry and Technology Ministry and hosted by the Turkish Space Agency, or TUA, and SAHA Istanbul.

As Turkish companies showcase their products at the congress, major agreements are also being signed with international partners.

According to information obtained by an Anadolu Agency correspondent, TURKSAT and China-based satellite operator China Satcom signed a comprehensive protocol for technology production.

The agreement was signed at the TURKSAT stand by TURKSAT Deputy General Manager for Satellite Services Selman Demirel and China Satcom CEO Ma Haiquan.

The agreement aims to bring together the engineering expertise of the two countries in R&D, product development and commercialization.

Joint R&D moves to hardware, software phase

The partnership between the two institutions began last year with capacity sharing and was expanded through decisions taken at World Space Business Week in Paris.

With the process now moving directly to the hardware and software development phase, a new era focused on joint R&D and production in space technologies has begun between Türkiye and China.

Under the agreement, TURKSAT and China Satcom plan to jointly produce unmanned aerial vehicle communication systems, satellite-based Internet of Things technologies and smart border security systems.

TURKSAT will also expand its solution portfolio by carrying its existing end-to-end satellite and communication capabilities into new technology and application areas.

Turkish and Chinese engineers will work together on a process extending from market needs analysis and prototype development to testing, validation and commercialization.

Satellite-based IoT, smart border systems planned

Smart border security and Internet of Things technologies are among the other key areas covered by the agreement.

Special devices are planned for geographies where terrestrial communication networks are unavailable.

The agreement also includes the design of hardware that will allow devices used in sectors such as energy, agriculture and logistics to be managed via satellite in remote areas without mobile networks.

The lack of terrestrial communication infrastructure in many parts of the world creates a major gap in both border security and industrial data flows.

The agreement between TURKSAT and China Satcom aims to develop smart satellite monitoring and IoT systems capable of real-time data transmission in challenging geographies where base stations or fiber networks cannot reach.

With the integrated hardware and software solutions it plans to offer via satellite, TURKSAT aims to become one of the strongest technology suppliers in the global ecosystem.

A Joint Steering Committee will also be established to ensure the proper implementation of R&D and product development activities.

Both institutions will be represented equally on the committee, which will evaluate the work every three months.
