Türkiye's Turkish Grain Board (TMO) announced on Thursday that it raised state purchase prices for in-shell hazelnuts, a staple of the global confectionery industry, by about 28% for the 2026-2027 season, with procurement set to begin later this month.
TMO will pay ₺255 ($5.36) per kilogram for Giresun-quality hazelnuts, the premium grade, and ₺250 per kilogram for Levant-quality hazelnuts, the standard commercial grade, based on a 50% sound kernel yield.
The board will also pay an additional ₺5.1 per kilogram for each percentage point above the yield threshold for Giresun-quality hazelnuts and ₺5 for Levant-quality hazelnuts.
Purchases of in-shell hazelnuts are scheduled to begin on Aug. 24 after TMO completes technical, storage, staffing, and financing preparations for the buying campaign, the agency said.
TMO's purchase prices serve as the benchmark for Türkiye's hazelnut market, helping shape prices across the industry while providing growers with a guaranteed minimum price.
Last season, TMO raised purchase prices by around 50% to ₺200 ($4.93) per kilogram for Giresun-quality hazelnuts and ₺195 for Levant-quality hazelnuts after the worst frost in decades slashed nearly half of Türkiye's hazelnut crop.
Türkiye is the world's largest hazelnut producer and exporter, accounting for around 60% of global production and roughly two-thirds of worldwide hazelnut exports.
The crop is among the country's leading agricultural exports, a major source of income across the Black Sea region, and a key ingredient for the global confectionery industry, particularly chocolate and spread manufacturers.
During the first 11 months of the 2025-2026 export season, which runs from Sept. 1 to July 31, Türkiye exported 186,400 metric tons of hazelnuts, down 36.8% from a year earlier as frost-hit supplies weighed on shipments. Export revenue, however, edged down just 1.4% to $2.4 billion, as higher prices largely offset the drop in volumes.
Official first estimates point to a strong recovery in the 2026 harvest, with Türkiye's hazelnut production expected to climb 62.2% to 715,350 metric tons from 441,000 tons a year earlier as orchards recover from last year's frost damage.
