The 33rd International Adana Golden Boll Film Festival, organized by Adana Metropolitan Municipality in the southern Turkish city of Adana, has announced the 10 finalists competing in its National Feature Film Competition. The festival will run from Sept. 26 to Oct. 4.
A selection committee made up of film critics Esin Kucuktepepinar, Mehmet Acar and Ugur Vardan chose the finalists, who will also compete for Golden Boll Awards across 16 categories.
Half of this year's finalists will premiere at the festival. They are "Expectation" (Beklenti) by Ali Ozel, "Monster" (Canavar) by Tunc Sahin, "Fashionable Marriage" (Moda Evlilik) by Mirac Atabey, "French Fries" (Patates Kizartmasi) by Sinan Bicici and "Existence" (Varlik) by Muzaffer Mehmet Caglar.
The remaining five finalists arrive in Adana after premiering at other international festivals. "Mutter: A Mother's Memory Book" (Mutter: Bir Annenin Hatira Defteri) by Alphan Eseli had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and will now premiere in Turkey in Adana.
"Sunface" (Gunyuzu) by Banu Sivaci previously screened in the Forum section of the Berlin Film Festival. "Whistlers in the Dark" (Karanlikta Islik Calanlar) by Pinar Yorgancioglu had its world premiere at IFFI Goa, while "Dead Dogs Don't Bite" (Olu Kopekler Isirmaz) by Nuri Cihan Ozdogan premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival.
“Alone Together" (Bir Arada Yalniz) by Ali Vatansever follows its debut at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
Actress Zuhal Olcay will chair the jury for the National Feature Film Competition. She is joined by actors Sebnem Bozoklu and Salih Bademci, director Erdem Tepegoz, screenwriter Nilgun Ones, cinematographer Gokhan Tiryaki, and film critic and academic Ayca Ciftci. Winners will be announced on Oct. 3 during the festival's Grand Award Ceremony and closing night.
The festival received 1,094 film submissions this year across six competitions.
The National Feature Film Competition drew 45 submissions, the Documentary Film Competition received 66, the International Short Film Competition received 154, the National Short Film Competition received 412, the Student Short Film Competition received 312, and the Artificial Intelligence Short Film Competition received 105.
A separate Literary Adaptation Feature Screenplay Competition, aimed at connecting literature and cinema, drew 54 project submissions.
Festival screenings will take place at the CinemaPink by Maximum halls inside 01 Burda AVM shopping center in Adana.
