"Avengers: Doomsday," the next entry in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe, has already made $50 million in domestic pre-sales, three months before the movie's Dec. 18 release date, according to Disney.
The pre-sale figures for ''Doomsday'' were announced by Walt Disney Company senior executive VP & Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference.
The studio noted that Infinity Vision tickets account for more than 70% of pre-sales, underscoring strong moviegoer demand for premium large-format screens; the film will also have IMAX screens on its opening weekend.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the movie brings together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and the original X-Men to face Victor Von Doom.
Robert Downey Jr. returns to play the new Big Bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), following Iron Man's death at the end of "Avengers: Endgame."
"Doomsday" also represents the first official MCU appearance for a number of former "X-Men" actors from the Fox era, following Disney's acquisition of the studio. Patrick Stewart is back as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen is Magneto, James Marsden is Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer is Beast, Rebecca Romijn is Mystique, Alan Cumming is Nightcrawler and Channing Tatum is Gambit.
The marketing campaign behind "Doomsday" has been paying dividends well before release.
Back in March, the studio's unusual reveal of the "Doomsday" cast, a livestream lasting more than five hours that showed names appearing on the backs of chairs on set, drew 275 million digital views and generated 3.1 million mentions on social media, according to Marvel.
That momentum, combined with the strong theatrical performance of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," helped push Disney+ to a record-breaking August, with the platform logging more than 420 million streaming hours, its highest monthly total ever.
Marvel content alone accounted for over 200 million of those hours, representing the largest boost Disney+ has ever seen tied to a theatrical release.
