Five previously unreleased Britney Spears songs arrive Friday in an expanded reissue of her landmark 2001 album, giving fans a fresh look at the pop star as she stepped from teen idol into adulthood.
"Britney (25th Anniversary Edition)," from Legacy Recordings, includes two remixes and five unreleased tracks from the album’s era.
It is her first new-to-the-public music since she said in a 2024 Instagram post that she would "never return to the music industry."
The reissue lands after a turbulent few years for the singer. In 2021, she was freed from a court conservatorship that controlled her life and money for nearly 14 years.
In February, it was announced that she had sold the rights to her music catalog to Primary Wave for an undisclosed sum.
"Britney," her third album, was released just before her 20th birthday and went quadruple platinum in less than two months. It marked a deliberate shift from the bubblegum pop of her debut years. The opening single, "I’m a Slave 4 U," was produced by The Neptunes, the duo of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, and set a more mature, R&B-edged tone.
Even tracks from longtime collaborators Max Martin and Rami Yacoub, such as "Bombastic Love," gained a sharper edge.
Spears followed the path of pop forebears like Madonna and Janet Jackson, but kept the album PG-13, hinting at sensuality while staying accessible to her young fans. Themes of autonomy run through songs like "Overprotected" and "Lonely."
She also co-wrote five tracks on the original album, including "Cinderella" and "Let Me Be."
The first archival track, "She’ll Never Be Me," was co-written with Timberlake, who also sings backing vocals. Its release follows Spears’ 2023 memoir, "The Woman in Me."
The other songs, "Am I a Sinner," "Right Now (Taste the Victory)," "When I Say So" and "My Big Secret," would all sit comfortably as B-sides to the original record.
"My Big Secret" is a soulful, unusually long track that showcases what may be Spears’ strongest vocal on the whole project, a striking falsetto.
Several lyrics read as a response to the tabloid fixation on her virginity at the time. "I don’t want to mislead you," she sings on "When I Say So." On "Am I a Sinner," she asks, "Something’s wrong with the picture / This is not my fault."
