Spanish actor Javier Bardem used his appearance on stage at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles to call for peace and Palestinian freedom while presenting the Oscar for best international film.
Speaking from the podium, Bardem opened his remarks with the phrases “No to war” and “Free Palestine,” bringing a political message into one of the night’s high-profile moments.
The actor also appeared wearing a pin that read “No a la guerra,” a Spanish phrase meaning “No to war.” Alongside it, he wore another pin expressing support for Palestine, reinforcing the message he delivered from the stage.
His remarks were short, but they drew attention because they directly linked the awards ceremony to wider calls for peace and freedom for Palestinians.
Bardem’s comments came against the backdrop of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which began in October 2023 and lasted two years before continuing in various forms.
According to the sources, more than 72,000 Palestinians have been killed, 172,000 wounded, and 90% of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure destroyed.
