Oscar-winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino will make his theater debut next year with a new comedy on London's West End starring Sacha Baron Cohen, the production’s backers announced Sunday.

"The Popinjay Cavalier," written and directed by Tarantino, begins previews Feb. 23 at the Phoenix Theatre and opens officially March 18, 2027, according to Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions.

Swashbuckling adventure, Tarantino style

The producers describe the play as a fast-paced comedy of deception and disguise set in 1830s Europe, inspired by the swashbuckling adventure epics of stage and screen.

It will be the first West End appearance for Baron Cohen, best known for creating the characters Borat and Ali G.

"When the greatest director in the world calls you, you don't ask questions," Baron Cohen said in a statement about joining the project.

Tarantino, whose films include "Reservoir Dogs," "Pulp Fiction" and "Inglourious Basterds," last directed a feature film with 2019’s "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood."

He remains active in film. A sequel he wrote, "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth," is scheduled for release in November. Directed by David Fincher, it brings back Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth, the former Hollywood stuntman he played in the original.

Tarantino also wrote a novel adaptation of "Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.” His new novel tied to the sequel is due Dec. 8 from Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins.
