Sony's zombie-horror-comedy reboot is aiming for a domestic opening somewhere in the $40 million to $50 million range. Some studios and independent trackers now think it could do even better, potentially topping $50 million and edging close to $60 million.
Sony spent $75 million to produce the film, the second remake and eighth installment in the horror series. Theater owners have extra reason for optimism since the film comes from Zach Cregger, whose "Weapons" was one of last August's biggest box office surprises.
That R-rated film, an original thriller about students who went missing in the middle of the night, opened to $43 million en route to sleeper hit status.
The film is led by Austin Abrams, who plays Bryan, a medical courier, alongside a principal cast that includes Zach Cherry, Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, and Will Merrick.
By all accounts, the film hinges on Abrams' performance. Collider's review calls him a perfect protagonist for the reboot, someone who's perpetually ill-equipped but still likable.
Zach Cregger both directed and co-wrote the script, with Shay Hatten, based on Capcom's Resident Evil games.
"Resident Evil" began as a 1996 video game and expanded into a multimedia franchise that spans sequel games and film and television adaptations.
The franchise made its cinematic debut in 2002 with "Resident Evil," featuring Milla Jovovich as Alice, a former security specialist turned covert operative which is a role she'd return to across five more films spanning the 2000s and 2010s.
Together, those movies earned roughly $1 billion worldwide, making the series the top-grossing video game adaptation of its time.
