Turgutlu, a district in Türkiye's Manisa province roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of the Aegean port city of Izmir, held its fourth Traditional Cirit and Keskek Festival.
Cirit is a traditional Turkic equestrian sport in which mounted riders throw blunt wooden javelins at opposing team members, historically used as military training by Turkic peoples since their migration from Central Asia to Anatolia.
Keskek, a ceremonial dish of pounded wheat and meat cooked communally in large cauldrons, was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011.
The event, organized by the Turgutlu Selendi Aid and Solidarity Association, distributed keşkek to attendees and featured performances by regional musicians.
Equestrian sports clubs from the nearby Selendi district staged an exhibition match. Riders competed on a sand-covered field as residents watched the contest.
Turgutlu District Governor Selami Kapankaya, Mayor Cetin Akın, department heads, political party representatives and numerous residents attended the event.
