U.S.-based visual effects staffers working directly on ''Star Wars'' productions have formally joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the union representing entertainment industry crew members.
The new bargaining unit spans titles such as The Mandalorian & Grogu, Ahsoka, and Starfighter. After voting overwhelmingly in favor of organizing, the group will now move into first contract negotiations with the studio.
''These workers help bring some of the most ambitious stories in entertainment to life, and they deserve a meaningful voice in shaping their working conditions,'' said IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb.
''We are proud to welcome these visual effects professionals into our proud union,'' he added.
Visual effects professionals have become integral to the modern entertainment industry, driving the digital worlds, characters, and effects that define today's film and television landscape.
As the sector continues to grow, an increasing number of these workers are turning to unionization, seeking the job protections, benefits, and bargaining power that come with formal representation.
Visual effects workers at Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Pictures, and on the ''Avatar'' franchise ratified their first contracts with IATSE last year.
The agreements secured standard protections such as overtime pay, pension and health plan eligibility, meal penalties, and guaranteed rest periods. They also included raises of 4% in the first year and 3.5% in the second.
Visual effects staffers at Apple Studios likewise voted unanimously, 12-0, to organize with IATSE, while employees at DNEG, a leading Canadian VFX company, unionized across 2023 and 2024.
