Historic Kadikalesi, also known as Anaia, in Türkiye's western Aydin province has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, the provincial culture and tourism authorities announced.
The archaeological site, located in the Kusadasi district, entered the list as part of the dossier titled "Trading Posts and Fortifications on Genoese Trade Routes: From the Mediterranean to the Black Sea."
According to the Aydin Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Kadikalesi is regarded as one of Türkiye's important candidates for world heritage recognition because of its archaeological value, strategic location and rich cultural legacy.
Its inclusion in the multinational trade route dossier brings the historic site together with other fortresses and walled settlements linked to Genoese commercial activity between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
Archaeological excavations at Kadikalesi remain underway under the direction of Associate Professor Suna Cagaptay from the Department of Art History at Mugla Sitki Kocman University's Faculty of Letters.
