A new Paleontology and Fossil Museum is taking shape in Türkiye's central Kayseri province, where fossils dating back 7.7 million years and unearthed around the Yamula Dam are set to be displayed for visitors and researchers.
Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Memduh Buyukkilic inspected the construction site and received an update on the ongoing work from representatives of the contractor, according to a statement from the municipality.
Buyukkilic said the municipality placed importance on preserving Kayseri's historical and natural heritage and passing it on to future generations, adding that the museum was expected to contribute to the city's scientific and cultural life.
He also noted that the fossils, which shed light on Kayseri's past millions of years ago, had drawn interest from the scientific community.
Work on the fossil discoveries is being carried out through three parallel processes, bringing together excavation, scientific preservation and the construction of the museum that will eventually house the finds.
Excavations around the Yamula Dam are continuing, while specialists are also working to reconstruct, prepare and preserve fossils that have already been brought to light.
At the same time, construction of the museum is moving forward so that the discoveries can eventually be opened up to visitors.
The museum project includes four indoor exhibition halls, a gallery for fossil replicas, temporary exhibition spaces, a fossil laboratory and a dedicated fossil storage area.
It will also include children's play and education areas, administrative offices, a gift shop, as well as a ramp and elevator system designed to allow fossils to be moved in and out of the building.
A publicly accessible garden is also included in the project.
