Adana-born NASA astronaut Deniz Burnham said she will head to the International Space Station (ISS) in a few months and plans to send a wave from orbit to her fellow residents of Adana.
The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut shared the plan in a video message released by the U.S. Consulate in Adana.
Burnham announced that she is currently training for "Expedition 76," a long-duration mission to be carried out on the International Space Station.
Noting that she was born at Incirlik Air Base in Adana and that her maternal grandmother and grandfather lived in Türkiye, Burnham said she will go to the International Space Station in a few months.
Burnham said that when she goes to space, she will wave to her grandmother, her grandfather, her fellow Adana residents and the whole world.
Saying her grandmother is from Eceabat in Canakkale and her grandfather is from Afyonkarahisar, and that she grew up eating Turkish food, Burnham said, "My grandfather's curiosity about space affected our whole family. I remember he built his own telescopes. We would spend hours in our backyard watching the stars and planets."
Reminding that Türkiye is the 71st country to sign the Artemis Accords, Burnham stressed that she is proud to include Türkiye in the growing international coalition of like-minded countries dedicated to NASA's peaceful and transparent space exploration.
Pointing out that NASA has accomplished seemingly impossible feats together with its partners, Burnham said, "NASA sent four astronauts around the Moon as part of the Artemis II mission and carried out cutting-edge scientific missions such as the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope."
Underlining that countries like Türkiye add a bold vision and growing success to NASA's great endeavors, Burnham made the following remarks about Türkiye's space achievements: "In the process of developing its space program, we have seen Türkiye contribute to these great achievements, sending two astronauts to space and making progress in developing AYAP-1 (Moon Research Project), which will be Türkiye's first Moon mission.''
''We have also seen Türkiye bring the global space community together through TEKNOFEST and the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), two of the world's largest aerospace and technology festivals," she added.
Burnham stressed that, on behalf of NASA, they are honored to include Türkiye in the Artemis Accords community and said she is excited about what they will achieve together in the coming years.
