Kayseri pastirma, the world-renowned Turkish cured beef delicacy, has achieved a major milestone: Official recognition by the European Union (EU) as a Geographical Indication (GI) product. With this distinction, it becomes the 46th Turkish product to receive EU protection.
The delicacy now joins an elite list of 46 Turkish products with EU GI protection, including Gaziantep baklava, Malatya apricots, Erzincan tulum cheese, Aydın figs, and Ipsala rice. Each registration helps preserve local knowledge, support producers, and boost Türkiye’s international gastronomic identity.
Rifat Hisarciklıoglu, President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB), emphasized the extensive legal and technical efforts required.
“This is a proud moment for my hometown, Kayseri, and for our country. With the dedication of experts and local stakeholders, we have successfully achieved our goal,” he stated.
He also extended his congratulations to Kayseri Chamber of Commerce President Omer Gulsoy, the chamber’s board and assembly members, and everyone who contributed to the effort. The EU’s GI recognition ensures Kayseri pastirma is legally protected, preserving its unique flavor and production methods for generations to come.
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumakli, welcomed the decision, emphasizing its importance for promoting Türkiye’s traditional foods worldwide. He noted that GI protection enhances both the cultural value and export potential of local products, transforming Türkiye’s culinary treasures into globally recognized brands.
