A routine mushroom-collecting trip turned into a rare wildlife encounter for a resident of Pamukkale, Denizli, when he came across a monkey in the forested Camlik area.
Nizamettin Yigit, who had gone into the forest to collect mushrooms, spotted a free-roaming monkey wandering in the area. Yigit immediately contacted the Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP) to report the animal and ensure it was handled safely.
While waiting for authorities, Yigit attempted to keep the primate nearby and calm by offering it pieces of simit 'a traditional Turkish sesame bread.' The encounter, which Yigit recorded on his mobile phone, shows the monkey interacting with him in a surprisingly calm manner.
“I didn’t want it to run away before the rescue team arrived,” Yigit said. “Offering some simit seemed to keep it occupied for a while.” The footage of the encounter quickly drew attention on social media, highlighting the unusual interaction.
When conservation teams arrived, the primate 'later identified as a spider monkey' escaped into the forest before it could be safely captured. Officials said efforts to locate and secure the animal are ongoing.
Authorities noted that this is not the first such sighting in Denizli. On March 26, residents in Civril reported two monkeys in a tree. The animals were later captured and placed under protective care.
