Rainfall across Türkiye rose 10% above the seasonal norm in August and more than doubled compared to the same month last year, according to a report from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change's General Directorate of Meteorology.
The long-term average for August rainfall stands at 14.8 millimeters (0.58 inches). Rainfall measured just 7.9 mm in August 2025, but climbed to an average of 16.2 mm last month.
The increase was far from uniform across the country. Rainfall dropped by more than 80% compared to normal levels in nearly all of the Marmara Region, as well as around Izmir, Manisa, Kutahya, Cankiri, Kastamonu, Mugla, Agri, Hakkari and Van, the central and western parts of Central Anatolia, and the eastern part of Southeastern Anatolia.
By contrast, some areas around Karaman, Mersin, Hatay, Kayseri, Adana, Malatya, Sivas, Erzincan, Tunceli, Elazig, Adiyaman and Bingol saw rainfall exceed normal levels by as much as four times.
Overall, August rainfall came in below normal in the Marmara, Aegean and Central Anatolia regions, while all other regions saw levels above the seasonal average. The Mediterranean Region recorded its highest August rainfall in 11 years, while the Marmara Region posted its lowest level in 16 years.
By province, Rize recorded the highest rainfall nationwide at 107.5 mm. At the other end of the scale, Edirne and Sirnak saw their lowest August rainfall in 66 years, while Afyonkarahisar, Bilecik, Bursa, Eskisehir, Kirklareli and Tekirdag recorded their lowest levels in 28 years.
Several provinces set records in the opposite direction: Erzincan, Gumushane, Elazig and Tunceli recorded their highest August rainfall in 66 years, Malatya and Sivas in 55 years, Giresun in 42 years, and Karaman in 29 years.
Nationwide, an average of 3.8 rainy days were recorded in August, above the 1991-2020 norm of three days. Rainy days ranged from 15 to 20 in the coastal areas of the Eastern Black Sea region and around Ardahan and Kars, while Izmir, Mugla, Kirklareli, Edirne, Mardin, Batman, Sirnak and Siirt received no rainfall at all.
Broken down by region, Marmara saw August rainfall fall 84% below the seasonal norm and 63% below last year's level, while the Aegean Region recorded a 71% drop from normal and a 60% decline year-on-year.
The Mediterranean Region saw rainfall rise 82% above normal and more than double compared to last year. Central Anatolia's rainfall fell 7% below normal but rose 18% compared to last year.
The Black Sea Region recorded an 11% increase above normal and more than doubled year-on-year, while Eastern Anatolia saw rainfall rise 85% above normal and more than double compared to last year. Southeastern Anatolia recorded a 6% increase above normal and more than doubled compared to the same period last year.
