The Governor of Bitlis conducted an on-site inspection of final preparations in the Ahlat district ahead of upcoming celebrations marking the 955th anniversary of the historic Malazgirt Victory.
According to an official statement released via the governor's office's social media channels, Governor Ahmet Karakaya visited several key landmarks anchoring the event. The provincial inspection tour included the Recep Tayyip Erdogan National Garden, the Seljuk Square Cemetery, the Ahlat Presidential Complex, and the Devlet Bey Mansion.
During the visit, Karakaya personally reviewed ongoing infrastructure projects and received detailed updates from municipal representatives and relevant institutional heads.
Emphasizing the national significance of the upcoming festivities, Karakaya directed that all structural arrangements, site maintenance, and landscaping improvements must strictly align with the unique historical and cultural identity of the historic Ahlat district.
Karakaya stated that all necessary measures have been implemented to ensure the best possible reception for citizens and guests attending the event.
The governor was accompanied during the inspection by local university officials, provincial security commanders, municipal leaders, and representatives from state institutions and foundations involved in the preparations.
The Battle of Malazgirt, known internationally as the Battle of Manzikert, was fought on Aug. 26, 1071, near the town of Malazgirt in what is now the Mus province in eastern Türkiye. Seljuk Turkish forces led by Sultan Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantine Empire's army under Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes in the battle.
The victory is regarded as a turning point in Turkish and Anatolian history, opening the way for Turkish migration and settlement into Anatolia and laying the groundwork for the eventual establishment of Turkish states in the region, including the later Ottoman Empire.
The battle is commemorated annually in Türkiye, with major ceremonies traditionally held both in Malazgirt, where the fighting took place, and in Ahlat, a historic Seljuk-era city in Bitlis province known for its medieval Turkish-Islamic architecture and cemeteries.
As in previous years, this year's commemorative events marking the anniversary of the 1071 Battle of Malazgirt will be held simultaneously on Aug. 23–26 in Bitlis's Ahlat district and Mus's Malazgirt district.
