Washington, D.C., briefly became the most polluted major city across the globe, according to air quality tracking firm IQAir data, following a massive Independence Day fireworks display.

White House-contracted Pyrotecnico targeted a new world record by launching 850,000 fireworks for the "Freedom 250" celebration, despite expert warnings that detonating such an immense volume in 40 minutes posed severe health risks.

The high-stakes display capped off a July 4 holiday already marred by a record-breaking heat wave that disrupted traditional parades, block parties, and barbecues across the United States.

A severe thunderstorm delayed the fireworks show by over an hour, pushing the kickoff to just before midnight. Air pollution monitors in Washington, D.C., first detected particulate spikes around 8:00 p.m. local time from smaller community displays, but fine particulate matter surged dramatically once the main White House exhibition began, blanketing spectators in heavy smoke downwind and completely obscuring their view.

Air pollution in Washington spiked to dangerous levels over the weekend. Fine particle pollution hit more than 200 micrograms per cubic meter at one local monitoring station.

These tiny particles, which can penetrate deep into the lungs, triggering acute respiratory injuries and long-term health complications, far exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) safe 24-hour threshold, which caps exposure at 35 micrograms per cubic meter.

The severe pollution triggered "Code Purple" alerts across the city and the surrounding region, including parts of Maryland and Virginia, warning that the air quality had reached very unhealthy levels for the entire population.

According to IQAir, Washington briefly ranked as the world's most polluted major city between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, July 5. The spike was temporary as Washington has since dropped to 41st on the global list, with Jakarta, Kinshasa, and Addis Ababa currently holding the top three spots.

EPA response

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Press Secretary Brigit Hirsch downplayed the environmental impact of Washington, D.C.'s massive Independence Day display, praising the event as "awesome" and welcoming the celebration of America's 250th anniversary.

The EPA, under the Trump administration, has consistently championed deregulation and aligned closely with commercial interests.

A heavy downpour on Sunday morning cleared the dense, toxic smoke gridlocking the city, returning Washington's air quality to standard levels by noon. University of Maryland atmospheric scientist Russell Dickerson noted the city "dodged a bullet," explaining that while pollution peaked at dangerous levels, the weather prevented substantially worse health outcomes.

Pyrotecnico launched approximately 850,000 fireworks in an attempt to eclipse the current global milestone set on New Year's Day 2016 in the Philippines, which featured 810,904 pyrotechnics.

A Guinness World Records representative confirmed that they have received an official verification application from the Freedom 250 organizers.

However, the organization stated that they are unable to confirm if the record was officially broken until all evidentiary logs are submitted and reviewed by their team.
