President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held talks with Vietnamese State President Luong Cuong on Wednesday, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and discussing regional issues including the Gaza conflict.

The meeting took place at the Turkish House during the United Nations General Assembly's 80th session. Senior Turkish officials attended the talks, including Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, Defense Minister Yasar Guler, Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir, Trade Minister Omer Bolat, and Presidency of Defense Industries head Haluk Gorgun.

According to a statement from Türkiye's Communications Directorate, Erdogan emphasized the potential for advancing Türkiye-Vietnam relations to a higher level and stressed the need to increase trade volume between the two nations. The Turkish leader expressed both countries' desire to enhance cooperation on international and regional platforms.

Gaza conflict takes center stage in regional discussions

On regional matters, Erdogan highlighted Türkiye's efforts to establish a just and lasting peace in Gaza, stating that it was "gratifying to see Vietnam on the right side of history regarding the Palestinian issue," according to the official statement.

The talks come as Türkiye seeks to diversify its international partnerships beyond traditional allies, with Vietnam representing a key Southeast Asian partner.

Türkiye and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 1978, and trade between the countries has grown steadily in recent years, though it remains modest compared to Türkiye's trade with other major economies. Both leaders' presence at the UN General Assembly provides an opportunity for such bilateral consultations on the sidelines of the global gathering.
